How to Choose a Motorcycle Jacket: Leather vs Textile, Armor and Fit
A good riding jacket protects you from road rash, wind, rain and sun. The best one is the one you’ll wear every time, so comfort and fit matter as much as material.
Leather vs textile
Leather offers great abrasion resistance and ages well, but it is hotter in summer and needs care in the rain. Textile (nylon, polyester, or Cordura-style fabrics) is lighter, often waterproof and usually comes with zip-out liners, which makes it more versatile across seasons. Mesh textile jackets are the pick for hot climates.
Armor matters
Look for CE-certified armor at the shoulders and elbows, and a back protector. CE Level 2 armor absorbs more impact than Level 1. Armor must sit directly over the joint, so try the jacket on and move your arms as if you were holding handlebars.
Fit checklist
- Snug across the shoulders and chest without restricting movement.
- Sleeves long enough when your arms are extended forward.
- Adjustable waist and cuffs so armor stays in place in a crash.
- A collar that seals against wind without choking you.
Extras
Reflective panels or high-visibility colors improve visibility to drivers. Connecting zippers let you attach the jacket to riding pants, which stops it riding up.
Whatever you choose, pair the jacket with proper gloves, boots and pants. Protection works best as a full kit.
